PhD Position in Scientific Visualization
FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany

Description: The Visual Computing Group at the Friedrich-Alexander University (FAU) of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, is looking for a motivated PhD candidate to research in the field of scalable feature extraction. In this project, we research novel feature extraction algorithms to address the scalability challenges in several application areas, including climate science, geophysics and fluid dynamics.

Requirements: We are seeking motivated, creative candidates, who are capable of working in a multidisciplinary team, and who have an above average primary university qualification (master degree or diploma) in computer science or a related field (e.g., information technology, mathematics, computational engineering, etc.). Knowledge in computer graphics or visualization is desirable. A good command of the English language is prerequisite.

PhD Position in Interactive Data Visualization
University of Zürich, Switzerland

Description: This open position is for a research assistantship in a PhD program in computer science in the Visualization and MultiMedia Lab of the Department of Informatics at the University of Zürich. We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student with an interest in interactive data visualization and analysis of large audio-visual movie archives. The project is targeted at the interactive analysis and visualization of large movie collection datasets, covering aspects such as the analysis of spatial, temporal, visual, emotional and aesthetic features in image and video composition.

Requirements: A MSc degree in computer science or closely related area from a top research university is required to enter our PhD program. A prior focus on or experience with interactive data visualization or computer graphics, as well as good math skills and excellent programming skills are also required.

PhD Position in Interactive Visual Data Analysis
University of Zürich, Switzerland

Description: We are looking for motivated research assistants (m/f/d) in the areas of visual analytics, interactive data science, and interactive machine learning for PhD projects in the Interactive Visual Data Analysis Group at the University of Zurich (UZH). Together, we will develop new approaches for the characterization, design, and evaluation of interactive visual interfaces to combine the strengths of both humans and algorithms in interactive machine learning and data science applications. The positions are available with the possibility to develop a PhD thesis in Computer Science at UZH.

Research Context: In each PhD project, the primary research focus will be at the intersection between Information Visualization, Visual Analytics, Human-Computer Interaction, and Machine Learning. Each PhD project will follow a human-centered approach to data science, in order to foster the involvement of humans in the data analysis process with interactive visual interfaces. The research will be on the combination of the strength of humans and machines in an iterative and incremental data analysis process in order to tackle remaining data science challenges.

Examples of data-oriented challenges are heterogeneous data, dirty data, uncertain data, or unlabeled data. Important model-oriented challenges include data preprocessing, model building, model quality assessment, or model explanation. Particularly interesting user-oriented challenges are different degrees of user expertise, users’ personalization intents, and understanding and supporting user preferences with respect to data and tasks.

The contributions of the PhD projects will include human-centered data science solutions tailored to the information need of individual users. These new approaches will also make machine learning applicable to larger user groups in the context of data science and digitalization initiatives. PhD Position in Interactive Visualization for Life Science Applications
TU Delft & Leiden University Medical Center, The Netherlands

Description: Visualization and Visual Analytics play an important role in life-science research. There is an urgent need for fast and scalable methods as well as solid visualization- and interaction-design to capitalize on the discovery potential of related data. A lot of biological data is heterogeneous, multi-modal, and/or high-dimensional. In previous successful collaborations with life-science researchers, we have built successful visual analytics platforms such as Cytosplore and co-published in high-impact venues such as Nature or Nature Communications. This position aims to build on these works to build visual analytics methods and workflows with a specific focus on integrating data from different brain-omics-sources, such as single-cell omics data, spatial omics data, etc. Within the context of the project the position is still very open and themes can be comparative visualization, for example with the goal to compare data from different species, patient cohorts, or disease stages. multi-modal integration and visualization for example to visualize multi-comics data such as single-cell RNA-sequencing and GWAS spatio-temporal visualization with the goal to visualize longitudinal studies of patients multi-scale visualization from gene-to-micro/meso/macro-scale and back.

The position is part of an NWO Gravitation program – Brainscapes – and will be carried out in close collaboration between the Computer Graphics and Visualization (CGV) group at TU Delft, the Leiden Center for Computational Biology at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) and domain researchers from VU Amsterdam and Utrecht University.

Requirements: We are looking for a candidate who meets the following requirements:

  • You have experience with or a strong background in visual analytics or visualization, and/or computer graphics. Preferably you finished a master’s in computer science, (Applied) Mathematics, (Applied) Physics or Electrical Engineering.
  • You have excellent programming skills and experience in high-performance computation using (parallel) C++, OpenGL, CUDA, or similar.
  • You have good communication skills, and the ability to participate successfully in the work of a multidisciplinary research team.

PhD Position in Information Visualization / Visual Analytics

Description: We are seeking for an engaged and bright PhD student to work with us in the areas of Information Visualization and Visual Analytics. The main focus of the position is:
Visual analysis of large and complex, multivariate networks and/or text data Research in this project will involve foundational visualization principles, techniques and visual analytics tools for analyzing heterogeneous network/text data coming from various data sources. The work will even include the development and provisioning of a suitable backend infrastructure to serve the web-based, interactive visual display with the needed original and derived data streams, and/or user data collected during the analytical process. Main supervisor will be Prof Andreas Kerren.

Note that a PhD position in Sweden is a salaried employment with the right to social benefits. As a doctoral student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. PhD Position in Visual Data Analysis
Zuse Institute Berlin, Germany

Description: The Visual Data Analysis group at Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB), Germany, is looking for a PhD candidate for a DFG-funded interdisciplinary project with Egyptologists from the Papyrus collection of the Egyptian Museum in Berlin. Goal of this project is the development of visual data analysis tools for the virtual unfolding of ancient papyrus packages to make the documents readable without physically unfolding them. Requirements: The project lies at the intersection of several research areas. It will involve image analysis as well as computer graphics and geometry processing. We are therefore looking for a PhD student with a Master’s or Diploma degree in Computer Science or a related field (e.g., information technology, mathematics, computational engineering, etc.) with a specialization in one of the three areas and a strong interest in the other two. An interest in interdisciplinary work and a good command of English is also required.

Post-Doctoral Fellow: Scientific Data Analysis and Visualization

Description: The Scientific Computing and Imaging (SCI) Institute at the University of Utah invites applications for one post-doctoral researcher for interdisciplinary work spanning scientific data analysis and visualization. Visualization Scientist
King Abdullah University of Science & Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia

Description: The KAUST Visualization Core Lab (KVL) is seeking a highly motivated and collaborative scientist with a strong background in HPC visualization design and support. KVL advances the KAUST mission by providing cutting-edge visualization and data science services; collaborating with domain researchers to accelerate discoveries through large-data visualization, machine learning, and data science; and supporting the needs of KAUST and in-Kingdom entities by providing access to and training on state-of-the-art visualization hardware and software for scientific discovery.

The scientist will work in collaboration with other team members to build cutting-edge interactive scientific visualization workflows for domain scientists and industry partners on a variety of platforms, including ultra-high-resolution tiled displays and virtual reality environments. The scientist will also design and implement HPC visualization and analysis pipelines from simulations running on supercomputing facilities at KAUST, including Shaheen (KAUST’s Cray XC40 system) and other HPC GPU-based clusters.

The scientist should be equally comfortable in software development, scientific visualization, HPC systems, and big data. Some knowledge of deep learning techniques and willingness to learn and explore the data science area will also be required. The candidate is expected to keep abreast of current scientific developments in the field and must be able to work under strict deadlines.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provide HPC visualization and data science support to research endeavors across campus
  • Maintain accurate documentation and training guidelines for software and hardware visualization tools
  • Propose, evaluate, and deploy new technology solutions for visualization and data science workflows in collaboration with other KVL staff and users
