As in past years, the Seventh International Semantic Web Conference will recognize the best student papers submitted to the research track. A short list of candidates will be selected by the track co-chairs and program committee and announced shortly before the conference. The selection of the best student paper from ISWC 2008 will be made from the candidates and announced during the conference.
A student paper is defined as a paper whose first author is a full-time student when the paper is submitted. In order to be considered for this award, a paper should be identified as a student paper when it is submitted by checking off the student paper box.
If your paper qualifies as a student paper, be sure to check off the box when you submit it. Having a paper nominated for this award, let alone selected, is a distinct honor. Plus there will be prizes.

Because some people have found it difficult to find the right submission pages with the current link structure, we decided to feature the links on the front page:
Submissions and reviewing for the different tracks and activities will be managed independently.
- Research track
- In use track
- Posters and demos
- Tutorials — submissions proposals for tutorial by 16 May via email to David Martin (martin at ai.sri.com.
- Doctoral consortium
- Semantic Web Challenge
- Workshops — the call for workshop proposals is closed. information on submissions to accepted workshops will appear here soon.

For easier assignment of reviewing responsibilities we requested authors of ISWC research paper submissions to enter their paper titles, keywords and abstracts into the EasyChair system by May 9.
ISWC is using pre-submission of paper submission metadata for the first time. It has been brought to our attention that for this reason public awareness about abstract pre-submission has been below expectation. Therefore, we grant an extension to authors for providing their data until the final submission deadline, i.e. May 16.
In order to facilitate review assignments and a thorough reviewing process, we do however strongly encourage authors to register their papers and submit their abstracts using the ISWC 2008 research paper submissions site the as early as possible, preferably today.

The call for the ISWC 2008 Sixth Semantic Web Challenge and Billion Triples tracks is out.
“We invite submissions to the sixth annual Semantic Web Challenge, the premiere event for demonstrating practical progress towards achieving the vision of the Semantic Web. The central idea of the Semantic Web is to extend the current human-readable web by encoding some of the semantics of resources in a machine-processable form. Moving beyond syntax opens the door to more advanced applications and functionality on the Web. Computers will be better able to search, process, integrate and present the content of these resources in a meaningful, intelligent manner.
As the core technological building blocks are now in place, the next challenge is to show off the benefits of semantic technologies by developing integrated, easy to use applications that can provide new levels of Web functionality for end users on the Web or within enterprise settings. Applications submitted should demonstrate clear practical value that goes above and beyond what is possible with conventional web technologies alone.
Unlike in previous years, the Semantic Web Challenge of 2008 will consist of two tracks: the Open Track and the Billion Triples Track. The key difference between the two tracks is that the Billion Triples Track requires the participants to make use of the data set –a billion triples– provided by the organizers. The Open Track has no such restrictions.
As before, the Challenge is open to everyone from academia and industry. The authors of the best applications will be awarded prizes and featured prominently at special sessions during the conference.

We anticipate having funds from the US National Science Foundation to partially support students currently enrolled in US universities in attending ISWC 2008. Students will be required to submit application and include proof of student status and a letter of recommendation. Since the funds are limited, only partial travel support can be provided. Preference will be given to students who are participating in the doctoral consortium, are an author or co-author on a paper, or are presenting a poster or demonstration. Awards will be based on a combination of merit and need and will probably range from US$ 500-1500.
