Student fellowships
UPDATE: Application deadline extended. The deadline is now August 22.

We are pleased to announce that two organizations have generously contributed funds to support participation by full-time students in ISWC 2008. The Semantic Web Science Association (SWSA) and the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) will provide 10,000 € and $20,000 respectively, with NSF funds being earmarked to support students attending U.S. Universities. We anticipate that the SWSA funds will support 10 awards of 1000 €, and that the NSF funds will support 13 awards of approximately $1500.
Our goal is to encourage students who want to become part of the Semantic Web research community, and we hope that participation in ISWC 2008 will be a significant event in the graduate careers of the selected students.
The doctoral consortium, in particular, creates an opportunity for doctoral students to test their research ideas, present their current progress and future plans, and to receive constructive criticism and insights related to their future work and career perspectives.
In selecting applications for travel support, preference will be given to students selected to participate in the doctoral consortium, followed by students who are first author on a paper accepted at the conference, followed by students who have other authorship on a conference or related workshop paper.
To be considered for an award, please send an application package to iswc08_fellowships@cs.umbc.edu by August 22, 2008. The package should contain:
- a brief description of your research work and interests, along with a description of the academic institution you are attending, the program of study you are following, and your expected graduation date.
- a letter of support from your adviser that also affirms your status as a full-time student;
- an estimate of your expenses for registration, travel, lodging, meals and incidentals. Here are some preliminary figures that you can use to estimate your costs. We anticipate that early student registration will be 380€ for the main conference and 120€ for each workshop. Hotels are available starting at 56€ for a single room and 78€ for a shared room.
- Information on papers that were or will be submitted to the ISWC doctoral consortium, research or in use tracks, poster and demo track, an ISWC workshop, or the Semantic Web Challenge. For each paper, give the title, all authors, submission target and status.
Successful applicants will be notified by Sept. 1. Please email questions to iswc08_fellowships@cs.umbc.edu .
