Are mobile devices really enhancing our productivity?

In highly flexible application areas such as the management of time-sensitive goods (e.g., stock-portfolios), healthcare, troubleshooting-repairs, or disaster relief, traditional support systems are typically desk(top)-bound and only marginally suited to support the often highly dynamic tasks that arise in these settings. The use of mobile/wireless devices is being proposed as the means for providing effective information technology support in such complex, dynamic, and error-prone domains. The goal of this project is to find (1) whether this widely proposed remedy -- the use of mobile/wireless technology/devices -- is indeed suitable for such tasks and (2) what modes of interaction are most suitable for supporting people in attaining the best performance when acting in dynamic task environments.
