Abstract for Tutorial 3: Semantic Web Service Systems and Tools

The proposed tutorial presents the Web Service Execution Environment (WSMX) and the Internet Reasoning Server (IRS) as two interoperable execution environments for Semantic Web services on the basis of the conceptual model defined by the Web Service Modeling Ontology (WSMO).

Semantic Web services combine Semantic Web technologies and Web services in order to overcome deficiencies of the current Web services technology stack built around SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI. Based on comprehensive semantic description frameworks, intelligent mechanisms are applied to enable dynamic discovery, composition, contracting, mediation, and execution of Web services.

WSMO and OWL-S are two major initiatives for Semantic Web services. Both have been submitted to the W3C as input towards a standardization effort for Semantic Web services. This tutorial presents and demonstrates WSMX and IRS as interoperable environments for developing, editing, managing, and executing Semantic Web services.

Attendees will gain an overview and better understanding of the architecture, design and interoperability mechanisms of these next-generation-web frameworks. Several previous tutorials presented on WSMO have concentrated on the theoretical aspects and fundamentals of the approach. As these aspects have now been widely discussed and disseminated through publications and earlier tutorials, we now aim at presenting implemented co-operating frameworks and tools making the Semantic Web services vision a reality.

(4) Hands-On Session

Experience has repeatedly shown that the hands-on session enables attendees to really understand Semantic Web services by "doing-it-yourself". The tutorial's target audience is academic and industrial researchers and developers working in the field of Semantic Web and Web services. No specific requirement is demanded as a pre-requisite for attending the tutorial but familiarity with the topic of Semantic Web services will be of benefit.
