2018 – The DDIS Summary https://www.uzh.ch/blog/ifi-ddis/2018/12/20/2018-the-ddis-summary/ Thu, 20 Dec 2018 13:09:06 +0000 http://www.uzh.ch/blog/ifi-ddis/?p=511 Research

2018 has been a turbulent and exciting year, and has provided many opportunities to do exciting research. More and more data is being produced, which calls for data mining & machine learning to make sense of this data. Technology is becoming more ubiquitous, and research on human computer interaction & computer supported cooperative work helps transition more pleasantly into this technological area. When data has semantic knowledge captured in it, such as in the semantic web, large graph processing allows to use this enriched data. Increasingly, data is not just static anymore; stream processing deals with the continuous stream of new data being generated.

Employees and Students

DDIS consists of senior staff, regular PhD students and PhD students in a joined cooperation with the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL). Over the last year, DDIS has decreased its size due to successful PhD students graduating: Shen Gao, Michael Feldman, Tobias Grubenmann and Bibek Paudel. However, the trend will be increasing again, after two new PhD students joined: Narges Ashena and Romana Pernischová. In fact, we are currently looking for a postdoc and PhD student so, do not hesitate to message us if you are interested or forward it to someone who is!

DDIS Group Composition in 2018

Various courses were supported or provided by DDIS:

Besides courses, the group offers the possibility to pursue master and bachelor theses, as well as master projects (which are part of the master’s program at the faculty).

In this interview, Prof. Bernstein expressed the opinion that in our current information society, it is important for people to learn the skills necessary to deal with digitalisation, such as coding, and more importantly, how to deal with data. Digital Democracy – Too risky or the chance of a generation? https://www.uzh.ch/blog/ifi-ddis/2018/01/25/digital-democracy-too-risky-or-the-chance-of-a-generation/ Thu, 25 Jan 2018 08:59:08 +0000 http://www.uzh.ch/blog/ifi-ddis/?p=401 In an article on SWI Swissinfo.ch on the risks and chances of a digital democracy, Prof. Dr. Abraham Bernstein gives his view on the matter. He argues in favour of “making citizens aware of political issues online and via smartphones, fostering discussions, getting quick feedback from the people on political issues, and simplifying the collection of signatures”. More about the current state of the debate can be found here.

Abraham Bernstein on SRF Radio about digitalisation and politics https://www.uzh.ch/blog/ifi-ddis/2017/12/14/abraham-bernstein-on-srf-radio-about-digitalisation-and-politics/ Thu, 14 Dec 2017 14:31:31 +0000 http://www.uzh.ch/blog/ifi-ddis/?p=394 Increasing digitalisation is happening in many different domains in Switzerland, but politics does not seem to be among them (yet). In radio show ‘Heute Morgen’ on SRF1, different experts were asked about how digitalisation could impact politics in Switzerland. Abraham Bernstein thinks politicians should be more courageous and adapt partially obsolete political processes by using the available technology. More people can be involved in the debates around political issues using tech, an opinion he also expresses with other researchers in their manifesto on digital democracy. The radio fragment can be found here (German audio and text).

Last week DDIS representatives visited the European Data Forum (EDF) in Athens. Apart from many personal and informal interactions with other forum participants the project was presented in two different contexts.

On March 19, Abraham Bernstein gave a overview talk about ViSTA-TV. The talk was filmed by Videolectures.net but has not been posted yet. We will be posting a link to the video as soon as it will be available.

In addition, Abraham Bernstein was interviewed by the Greek Public Television channel. The interview, which was part of a report that also contains with the two main organisers and with Marta Nagy-Rothengass, the Head of Unit Data Value Chain within the EC’s DG CONNECT (which finances ViSTA-TV) , provides a succinct overview of ViSTA-TV and sheds light on some possible uses of the VISTA-TV results. The interview is available both as part of the report and on YouTube.
