Elia Yuste holds a first honours degree in English with German Studies (Filologia Anglogermànica) from the Universitat de València, Spain, and a Master of Science in Machine Translation from the Centre for Computational Linguistics (CCL) at UMIST (University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology), UK.
In the last 12 years she has fulfilled research interests with applied language work of various kinds. She is a qualified translator and terminologist, working into Spanish and Catalan mostly from English and secondly from Italian and/or German. She has coordinated many (cross-national) multilingual translation projects, mainly from English into Romance languages, being responsible for quality control issues and leveraging resources with the help of technology. She is also an experienced translator trainer both in the corporate sector and at university level (having previously lectured full time in Spanish and Translation at Staffordshire University, UK), and a language (technology) consultant for different language service providers and global language industry players.
She is now guest researcher at the Institute of Computational Linguistics of the University of Zurich as a result of having been awarded a research grant from
ESKAS, the Swiss Federal Commission of Scholarships for foreign researchers,
during the academic year 2001/2. Her research project assessed the understanding
and use of electronic tools in the translation process from the Swiss
perspective.
During her stay at CL, UniZH, Elia has chaired two
successful international workshops, which have raised the interest of translation
(technology) scholars and practitioners alike, namely the First International Workshop on Language Resources for
Translation Work and Research, celebrated as a satellite event of
LREC'02
in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain on 28th May 2002, and the
Second International Workshop on
Language Resources for Translation Work, Research & Training, held
at the University of Geneva on 28th August 2004 under the auspices of
COLING'04. If you can read German, a brief report
on the Second Workshop appeared in Hieronymus (4/2004), the quaterly jounal of
ASTTI (Swiss Association of Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters), pp. 48-50.
This may also be found online at ASTTI's
Web site
under 'Kolloquium und Kongresse' > 'Veranstaltungsberichte', the direct link

Elia is currently engaged in the organisation of the Third International Workshop on Language Resources for
Translation Work, Research & Training to be held in Genua,
Italy, on 28th May 2006 in conjunction with
LREC'06
Since July 2002 she is also Corporate Spanish
Language and Culture Trainer for Management (p/t) at Swiss Re as agreed with the Department of
Continuous Education of the ZHW. For a list of
